The projects last sampling campaign took place over the last three weeks. The weather was tough, strong wind and waves tested us on numerous occasions. The cruise was carried on-board S/Y Oceania, a ship of the Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences.

Since the last sampling cruise of the NEEDED project is getting closer we were tasked with testing our equipment during a short cruise in Gdańsk Bay. Everything worked fine and is ready for the final cruise in August 2023. Take a look at the pictures!

NEEDED participants took part in the 55th EMBS Conference in Gdańsk. We gave talks and displayed posters.

This August members of the NEEDED team took part in a research cruise to the Nordic Seas. The weather was challenging, but we managed to reach our goals for this sampling campaign. Our team retrieved sediment cores and sediment surface samples. Additionally, water samples from different depths were taken to extract environmental DNA. We reached the final stop- Gdańsk port at 7.15 on 11th of September.

The yearly Sopot Science Fair (Sopocki Piknik Naukowy “Ocean Zmian”) took place on 11th of June. Our presentation “DNA z dna. Co osady na dnie morza mówią o przeszłości Ziemi?” (Eng.: “DNA from the bottom. What marine sediments say about Earths past?”) had a sizeable audience. We hope we’ll get to talk about science and our project to a wide audience again next year!

On June 7th we started our first in-person meeting at the Institute of Oceanology in Sopot. The day was filled with presentations and discussions. It was great to finally meet and summarize all of our work.

The Oceania is the only Polish research vessel adapted for a wide range of oceanographic research activities in physics, chemistry, ecology and marine biology in waters all round the world. Recently it undergoes the overhaul in the dry dock to be ready before summer NEEDED sampling campaign!

The sediment cores collected last year from RV Oceania in Greenland and Svalbard shelves arrived safely in NORCE, so today we can start magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Last November Stijn De Schepper, Project PI, was able to join the Arctic expedition on RV Kronprins Haakon together with researchers from CAGE at the University of Tromsø, in the midst of Arctic winter! It was a very successful cruise, where we have collected three long gravity cores, several multi-cores, and liters of seawater for the NEEDED project.
