First sampling campaign of the NEEDED project
20/11/2020

Due to the heavy pandemic situation all around the globe, it is very difficult to do science in its traditional way. Currently traveling between Poland and Norway is almost impossible. All meetings within the NEEDED project are on the ZOOM platform. We definitely lack face-to-face meetings, but we need to endure these hard times for fieldwork. Luckily, last November Stijn De Schepper, Project PI, was able to join the Arctic expedition on RV Kronprins Haakon together with researchers from CAGE at the University of Tromsø, in the midst of Arctic winter!

It was a very successful cruise, where we have collected three long gravity cores, several multi-cores, and liters of seawater for the NEEDED project. All have been safely transported to NORCE in Bergen and are waiting for further laboratory analysis.

Deplying water equipment
Deploying water sampling equipment. The water samples will be later processed using standard metabarcoding workflow, including eDNA extraction (from filters using the DNeasy PowerWater kit), PCR amplification, and high-throughput sequencing, followed by bioinformatic analyses. Photo: Mauro Pau
Multi corer
Multi-corer preserves the sediment-water interface. It will allow us to document the taphonomy of planktonic microbial eukaryotes as they sink through the water column and become preserved in seafloor sediments. Photo: Mauro Pau
