The Argo Poland is a component of global array of temperature/salinity profiling Argo floats. The Argo array amounts to 4000 floats at present. About 800 new floats are deployed per year (including circa 250 in frame of the Euro-Argo). What is Argo? Argo is an international programme that collects information from inside the ocean using a fleet of robotic instruments that drift with the ocean currents and move up and down between the surface and down to 6 000 metres deep. Each instrument, called float, spends almost all its lifetime below the surface.
The Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) represents Poland in the international Argo programme. Since 2009, the Institute has deployed fifty-three Argo floats. Of these, twenty-nine were deployed in the Nordic Seas from the IO PAN research vessel r/v Oceania, three in the same region from the Maritime University of Gdynia training vessel Horyzont II, and one from KV Svalbard near the North Pole. Since November 2016, IO PAN has also deployed twenty Argo floats in the Baltic Sea from r/v Oceania. In 2022, the Argo Poland Consortium was founded, which includes: |
