Our News
Start of the project
1.09.2021
Our project started on 1th September. Here we present you our core team (from right) : PI Alexandra Loginova,
Co-investigator Piotr Kowalczuk and technician Kinga Hoszek.
But that is not all of us! Check "our collaborators"
and "our international collaborators" to meet all the people working on DOMUSe project.
Shopping and cruise preparation
20.09.2021
The most important of the wardrobe is what is inside. How much does your wardrobe cost ?
The first step of every project is shopping. But do not confuse it with nice casual shopping - this one takes a lot of time and energy.
And of course, do not forget to put the prices of consumables into your proposal budget!
Preparation
21.09.2021
How can your idea become true? First, imagine what you want. Then, sketch it on a piece of paper. Next, find yourself a wizard who will make it a reality. In IOPAN we have
a working group that works with hardware that can do real magic.
Zbyszek and Janusz made the system, Maciej filled it up with electronics. After many talks, measurements, and tests
in the lab and the field, we are ready to go on our first cruise. Keep your fingers crossed!
Cruise
10.11.2021
In November we tested our equipment for the first time
in the cruise onboard R/V Oceania. We performed our incubations at two Baltic Sea deeps: Gotland and Bornholm.
Working on the sea is not a piece of cake - capricious weather can give it a hard time, sometimes requires sampling overnight or waking up before sunrise. And never takes just 8 hours a day. However, the views, sunrises and sunsets, good time with fellow scientists and, of course,
the results that we are hoping to obtain are making this experience amazing and one of a kind.
We thank the ship crue and cruise chief scientists,
P. Makuch and P. Kowalczuk for help with sampling and ship management. We are waiting forward to sample analyses
in the laboratory and, hoping for interesting results!
Eurofleets+
22.12.2021
During the last cruise we have got amazing news - our Eurofleet Co-PI project was evaluated positively!
Eurofleets + is an alliance of European marine research infrastructure. The Co-Principal Investigator (PI) Programme is made for early career researchers to teach them how
to conduct their research as chief scientists under the eye
of experienced scientists in EUROFLEETS+ scheduled cruises. Thanks to it, Alexandra Loginova will have a chance to try herself as a chief scientist on Finland’s National Research vessel RV Aranda! Our cruise will happen next year, starting from Helsinki, Finland.
Workshop
23.12.2021
On 7th - 10th December, we took part in a Workshop organized in IOPAN by professor Piotr Kowalczuk, Remote Sensing Laboratory.
The workshop was dedicated to a discussion of results
from the research projects DiSeDOM and CDOM-HEAT.
During the workshop, IOPAN hosted colleagues
from Technical University of Denmark and Norwegian Polar Institute.
We heard six great presentations by our guests and our remote sensing laboratory colleagues. One of which was made by Dr. Alexandra Loginova where she presented recent results obtained from the pore waters of the Baltic Sea. All presentations were followed by intensive discussions.
We would like to thank all workshop participants
for the fruitful discussion and pleasant time spent together.

Merry Christmas!
24.12.2021
How are you? Ready for a Christmas celebration?
Our scientific Christmas tree, done from our incubation system with help of our office colleagues is already filled with sweets and ready to host gifts from Secret Santa, who we did in our office!
During this special time, we would like to wish you to feel cozy and secure, and experience a lot of beautiful moments with those you love. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, let these days be an opportunity to stop for a moment
and appreciate what we have.
Take care of yourself, take a break to be ready
for the challenges that the new year will bring.
Cruise
April 2022

After testing the methodology last fall, it was time for some serious sampling! In April, we took part in two cruises during which we sampled three depths: Gdańsk, Borholm and Gotland. We would like to thank the entire crew, colleagues and helping students. And in particular to our PI's, Piotr Kowalczuk and Beata Szymczycha, for their support and substantive help. We take the samples to the institute and start the first laboratory campaign! Cannot wait for the results.

Third Scientific Conference of Polish Sea Explorers

11.07.2022

On 7-8.06 we took part in III Konferencja Naukowa Polskich Badaczy Morza „Stan
i Trendy Zmian Środowiska Morskiego”. We presented our project to polish scientific community. As well, Kinga has presented her Master studies thesis during the young scientists session (It was her first presentation on a scientific conference).
We became acquainted with latest scientific achievements of Polish oceanographers and have had some fruitful discussions with great researchers. We are looking forward
for the next opportunity like this.
Sopot Popular Science Picnic
15.07.2022
On Saturday last week we took part
in the Sopot popular science picknick, organized at the Institute of Oceanology
of the Polish Academy of Sciences (oceanofchanges.com). We told kids and their parents about sediment fluxes and dissolved organic matter, and also prepared small experiment for the youngest to do on their own and a little quest for those who are older. Together with us there were a lot of interesting performances (i.e. by @mopar_arctic, @akwariumgdynskie , @arctic_scg @the_needed_project and many others). We hope that all the guests had a good time
and learned a lot of interesting things, we
for sure did.
1 Year Aniversary
1.09.2022
How is your summer? I hope everybody charged their batteries and are ready for what September brings!
For us, 1st September is a celebration day - can you imagine, that our project has already been one year?! We are at the halfway point, but we are not slowing down -
on the contrary, we roll up our sleeves and start working even more intensively to use everything we learned
from the previous year and bring the project to a successful end. To sum up, we have prepared a movie from our ship and lab work. Enjoy!
Ocean Optics Conference XXV
7.10.2022
This week Alexandra Loginova joined
the Ocean Optics Conference XXV where she had the chance to present a part of our work. This was very interesting week, we are glad
that our project could get in touch
with the ocean optics community... also it was
a lot of fun!
Eurofleets+ cruise (CABLE)
15.10.2022
From 9th to 15th October Kinga Hoszek
and Katarzyna Mazur (Gomuła) took part
in the "CABLE" cruise led by Dr. Taavi Liblik from Taltech. This cruise was a part
of the Co-PI Eurofleets+ grant received
by Alexandra Loginova. Eurofleets+ is
an alliance of European marine research infrastructure. See our previous post for more info. During the cruise, Kinga and Kasia conducted the study in the Gotland Deep.
Thank you again Kasia for volunteering
and helping during cruises!
PS. We acknowledge Kai Salm for the photos. Thank you!
The last cruise
11-24.10.2022
Our intensive cruise time got to an end! We came back with new experiences and many samples...
11.10-24.10 Alexandra Loginova with our volunteer, Daniel took part in cruise onboard RV Oceania. They conducted the study
of Bornholm and Gdańsk deeps.
PS. Those were the last planned part
of DOMUSe project fieldwork. Now we are heading to the laboratory and data analyses. We keep our fingers crossed for enlightening results!
Women view at the sea
21.11.2022
This year Alexandra Loginova together
with several female researchers from IOPAN participated in an unusual project led
by www.oceanofchanges.com. In this project, female scientists shared the research topic they are passionate about and female artists inspired by those topics created amazing artworks. For DOMUSe project, Aleksandra Szewczun (third photo) painted her imagination of dissolved organic matter role
in the sea.
XIX Symposium of Young Oceanographers
2.12.2022
Kinga Hoszek participated in symposium
of young oceanographers with a talk about her master studies entitled "Analysis
of the influence of norfluoxetine on selected metabolic and defense pathways
in invertebrates using Mytilus trossulus
as a model species".
Kinga won a first prize in the section
of chemical oceanography. We are very happy and proud! Keep up fighting during your PhD! And Congratulations!
