MARine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning leading to Ecosystem Services
MARBEFES project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement no 101060937

Work Package 1 - Stakeholder Involvement and Governance Rules
Work package numberWP1Lead beneficiaryHuFoSS
Work package title Stakeholder Involvement and Governance Rules
Start month 1End month46
Objectives WP1 will inventory views of stakeholders, policy and management organisations regarding
1) perceptions on the social ecological systems of the BBT they are connected to,
2) their present needs and future requirements for tools and measures to optimize use and management of marine areas and safeguard a healthy marine ecosystem and its biodiversity, and
3) acting rules and regulations touching upon the ecology, biodiversity and ecosystem services in the marine zones of the BBTs, with an emphasis on Marine Protected Areas. Moreover, to allow for co-design by stakeholders during the entire project they are invited to contribute to all actions, and to test and evaluate results and outcomes of WPs and Tasks during the lifetime of the project. To this end, in cooperation with all WPs, workshops will be organized to inform and engage stakeholders. The outputs will be sets of recommendations by stakeholders to strengthen the impact of results from other WPs.

Work Package 2 - Broad Belt Transects across European Seascapes
Work package numberWP2Lead beneficiaryKU, IO PAN
Work package title Stakeholder Involvement and Governance Rules
Start month 1End month48
Objectives Establish Broad Belt Transects across Marine, Coastal and Transitional habitats in regional seas to:
  • Test and implement tools for assessing biodiversity, ecological function, ecosystem services and biodiversity valuation
  • Conduct integrated assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem services across four marine regions

Work Package 3 - Biodiversity and Ecosystem Tools
Work package numberWP3Lead beneficiaryCEFAS, UCD
Work package title Biodiversity and Ecosystem Tools
Start month 1End month40
Objectives
  • Develop analytical and conceptual tools to better understand rules on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning across seascapes and the physico-chemical factors that shape them, in order to clarify patterns and processes across taxa and environments and through time, spanning surface, water column and seafloor.
  • Develop tools to enable prediction of the impacts of multiple human activities, future scenarios and management options on ecosystem biodiversity, structure, function and production of ecosystem services.
  • Develop new methods and toolboxes to better inventory and monitor seascape biodiversity, ecological functioning and ecosystem services.

Work Package 4 - Ecological, Social and Economic Valuation
Work package numberWP4Lead beneficiaryIECS, CEFAS
Work package title Ecological, Social and Economic Valuation
Start month 1End month40
Objectives
  • Develop a handbook of tools for ecological and economic (financial and non-financial) valuation of marine biodiversity and its services and societal goods and benefits for implementing in the BBTs.
  • Characterise the benefits and co-benefits humans derive from coastal and marine ecosystem services for policy and decision making, for implementing the draft valuation handbook BBTs.

Work Package 5 - Integration and Scenarios
Work package numberWP5Lead beneficiaryLW ERIC
Work package title Ecological, Social and Economic Valuation
Start month 14End month48
Objectives
  • Adopt possible scenarios in order to project current trends in the future and assess their possible impacts.
  • Integrate and synthesize the data and information flowing from WPs 1-4 in order to test the scenarios through modelling.
  • Analyse any possible knowledge gaps emerging from the integration, synthesis of data and information and from testing of the scenarios in order to allow for supplementary tests at BBTs.

Work Package 6 - Upscaling/Outscaling Project Outputs for Governance & Stakeholders
Work package numberWP6Lead beneficiaryAPN
Work package title Upscaling/Outscaling Project Outputs for Governance & Stakeholders
Start month 19End month48
Objectives WP6 will upscale the outcomes of WPs 1-4 from local/regional management from the BBTs to EU-level policy making, to provide customised guidance for practitioners, member states representatives and policy-level stakeholders on EU and international levels, targeted to emerging needs. We will utilise state of the art scientific knowledge on European biodiversity and an in-depth understanding of current issues and challenges faced during implementation and reporting for biodiversity assessment and governance, based on the work in the BBT areas. WP6 will examine case studies in Martinique and the Black Sea and evaluate transferability of project outputs. The final WP6 output will be a synthesis and transfer of co-created knowledge from European-based understanding into Marine Biodiversity and Valuation Toolbox, to create a far-reaching legacy to benefit management and governance of marine waters where regulatory systems may not yet be applied across borders.
